New Jersey gastroenterologist Dr. Howard N. Guss is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with extensive expertise in conducting Colon Cancer Screenings and treating Barrett’s esophagus. He is one of the first gastroenterologists in New Jersey to provide Barrx Halo ablation, a new advanced non-surgical therapy for Barrett’s esophagus. He also is one of the first GI specialists in the state trained in prescribing Lotronex, a medication to treat diarrhea in Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Dr. Guss helped develop the drug as well, and continues to be an active clinical researcher.

His personalized approach to care and exceptional diagnostic skills have been hallmarks of his practice for almost two decades, and are backed by impressive credentials. He is a diplomat of the American Board in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. In addition, he has been honored as a Fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGAF) as well as American College of Physicians (FACP). He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association and the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.  He has been published in the American Review of Respiratory Diseases as well as in the Experimental Lung Research Journal, and was listed among America’s Top Physicians in Gastroenterology in 2006 by the Guild to Americans Top Physicians.

In addition to serving as Chief of Gastroenterology at Coastal Health Care in Sea Girt, Dr. Guss is one of the Medical Director at Advanced Endoscopy & Surgical Center, a premier AAAHC- and Medicare-certified and New Jersey state licensed ambulatory surgical facility in Eatontown, where he performs colonoscopies and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Dr. Guss is also Chief of Endoscopy at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, one of the regions premier medical centers, where they use innovative medical and surgical treatments and the latest diagnostic treatments to treat the full range of digestive diseases.

Dr. Guss earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1990 after receiving his Bachelor of Science. He participated in a seven-year combined program at the New York Institute of Technology and the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a Rotating Osteopathic Internship at The Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, an Internal Medicine Residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital, and a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. Community minded, Dr. Guss, an Eagle Scout himself, served as a Cub Scout Assistance Cub Master for five years and is now an Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts in his town. He is an avid Yankees fan and enjoys tennis, skiing and spending time with his wife, daughter and son.
